The League of Women Voters of the Grand Traverse Area presents a program honoring our Veterans. Major General (ret) Nelson J. (Jerry) Cannon will speak to us about the experiences of Veterans returning from service and how we can be supportive. General Cannon began his military career in 1967 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served as a combat veteran in Vietnam from November 1967 through January 1969. Following an honorable discharge in 1970, General Cannon enlisted in the Michigan Army National Guard and served in many capacities. Deployed assignments include Commander, Joint Detention Operations Group at Guantanamo Bay, and support of Operation Iraq Freedom to name a few. General Cannon holds a BA in Criminal Justice from the University of Detroit and a MA in Public Administration from Central Michigan University.
